Church History

At Ebenezer United Church of Christ, our story spans generations rooted in faith, community and a rich spiritual heritage.

Our journey began in 1883, not as a formally planned congregation, but as a response to the heartfelt desire of individuals from Reformed and Lutheran traditions seeking a place to worship in a familiar language and style. Twenty-two faithful individuals came together to establish a church, and remarkably, we still worship today in that same building, which now serves as our cherished worship center.

As the congregation grew, so did our facilities. Over the years, additions and improvements were made to better serve our church family and the wider community. These include a basement, kitchen, Fellowship Hall, classrooms, a street-level entrance, a lounge, a pastor’s office and the Upper Room. Each enhancement reflects our commitment to growth while preserving the historic character of our church.

Ebenezer is firmly grounded in the Evangelical and Reformed tradition, bridging Lutheran and Presbyterian practices. This ecumenical spirit continues to shape who we are, guiding our collaborative relationships with other denominations and inspiring a strong dedication to outreach and community service.

Throughout our history, 11 ordained ministers have faithfully led our congregation. Today, we are blessed to be guided by Rev. Dave Kohls, who leads us forward with faith, compassion and service at the heart of our mission.
